Julia Kerrison
Julia Kerrison
painter and illustrator
Julia trained initially in the theatre, working in New York and London’s West End as a set designer, scenic artist and mask and puppet maker on a huge variety of productions. This theatrical element is reflected in her work – dramatically lit portraits of colourful characters met backstage and in the streets and alleyways surrounding the theatre districts, alternating with larger pieces capturing moments from stories and fables known and loved the world over.
Julia chooses her materials carefully to reflect the mood and subject of each piece, from delicate pencil drawings of tiny birds to darker, more atmospheric pastel work. For her landscapes she incorporates leaves and grass seeds indigenous to the environment depicted, giving the work a rich variety of texture and a rare authenticity.
