Stuart Parkinson
fine artist currently specialising in drawing
Stuart Parkinson's drawings are completed over a number of months and are a composite of sights, impressions and feelings, with an element of the playful alongside a darker questioning of the everyday. The artist enjoys exploiting the many effects achievable with pen and ink, and pencil.
Stuart Parkinson (b. 1971 Walsall UK) studied at Winchester School of Art (1990-93) and Chelsea College of Art and Design (1994-95). Abbey Scholar in Painting at the British School at Rome (1997-98). Took part in group exhibitions at the British School at Rome and the British Consulate in Naples (1998). Moved from painting to drawing during his residency in the ACME studios in East London (2001-05). Early drawings shown in Sussex at his first solo exhibition, entitled Metromania (2003). One drawing accepted by the R.A. for its Summer Exhibition (2004). On leaving London, worked in Artspace Studios, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, on a body of work that formed a second solo exhibition in Southwell Minster under the collective title Market, Masque and Majesty (2008). Currently works in Leicestershire.
On Inner Circle, shortlisted in 2007 for the Jerwood drawing prize, Stuart said:
My studio is in the Nottinghamshire market town of Southwell. This drawing, the second of a series of three, owes a debt to the town’s annual Morris dancing event. The sedate setting, for example, brings together elements of the grounds of the famous Southwell Minster. I began, focussing on the simple idea of a single circle of dancers set in a recessive space. However, as the work progressed, the idea of further, concentric circles became appealing, and the already eccentric figures became more and more grotesque. Emphatically, the whole picture is a concoction – playful, theatrical, sinister maybe – and truly, a transmogrification of people and place.
I enjoy exploiting the many effects achievable with pen and ink, and pencil. I do not make any preparatory sketches, preferring to launch directly into the work.
