painter
Robin Hicks is an artist who often looks at life as a series of paintings, one life scene after another before her. She aims to recreate this using whichever medium she feels inspired by, with watercolour paint and pastel serving as her primary mediums. Textures, landscapes, portraits, stories behind faces, the human spirit, these are all subjects that she expresses through her paintings.
“When I walk along the beach and see the light sparkling off the waves of the translucent water, I cannot help but be moved to express this beauty through painting..."
“As I lean against a rough, stone wall which holds a history of lifetimes and I feel the harsh texture with all its contours and edges, I know I need to capture this artistically in some way... ”
Robin was born in Adelaide, and began drawing and painting from a very young age. As a child she always found a quiet spot to sit and explore the world of images around her and would express this through art using different mediums.
At the age of fifteen she attended life drawing classes and joined the Royal Art Society and continued private tuition under Reg Hicks for three years.
Under Reg Hicks' tuition Robin learnt how to paint with oils and chalk pastels and developed a love of portraiture, and the human figure.
During this time Robin also began private tuition with Ronald Coudrey for two years, learning the art of watercolour.
Robin graduated in Graphic Design and Illustration at the Norwood Further Education Centre, and is a current member of Royal South Australian Society of Arts and Pastel Artists of South Australia.
At age 20 Robin then travelled to England, Scotland, Europe, Thailand and America. The European landscape had great appeal, as the contrast and the depth of colours were enthralling to her.
While living in Scotland Robin produced her first large solo exhibition of thirty landscape paintings in watercolour, inspired by the English and Scottish countryside for the Edinburgh fringe Festival.
Robin has exhibited her work in wineries, galleries, cafes, Rotary Club art shows, private hospitals and restaurants in South Australia, NSW and Scotland.
Since 2008 Robin has held three solo exhibitions of about thirty paintings at The Lombard Gallery, and Noarlunga Private Hospital, and in 2011 won an award for outstanding work from The Stationmaster's Gallery in South Australia.
